Web Browsers

Accessing Canvas on the Web

Many issues that students experience with Canvas stem from using the wrong web browsers. For the best experience, use either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.  These browsers are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.  Each has pros and cons.  Firefox is slightly slower, but it allows for more privacy.  Chrome is the most widely used, but Google collects a lot of your data, so it allows for less privacy.

Canvas also offers excellent mobile apps for phones and tablets, which we will review later in the toolkit.

Which Browsers Create Problems?

  • For Mac users, please do not access Canvas with Safari. For Windows users, avoid Microsoft Edge. Using Canvas in these browsers can create issues.
  • Other less common browsers like Opera, Vivaldi, Tor, and Brave may also have issues.  While you may use these browsers for everyday web access, it is best to avoid them for Canvas.

Switching Your Default Browser

Now that you have installed your new browser, you may want to change it to your default browser on your computer.  This means every link you click will open with the browser of your choice.
