Workshop Leaders:

Photo of Julie Risien

Dr. Julie Risien is the Associate Director at Oregon State University’s STEM Research Center. She oversees operations and leads the Center’s research and programmatic portfolio on improving connections at the interface of society and science. Julie has been working at the interface of science and society for nearly 25 years. First doing kelp restoration throughout the Southern California Bight in collaboration with industry, running a water quality citizen science project in the same region. She conducted environmental education with the L.A. Unified School District getting kids out on boats for marine science experiences. As a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, Julie worked with communities and tribal leaders in the republic of Palau to assess the condition of their marine resources and co-develop sustainability oriented policy and management practices. She went on to work for Oregon Sea Grant where she worked with fishermen, surfers, land owners and other stakeholders to establish Large Marine Ecosystem research and management planning. Her current research focuses on the transformative power of learning networks, organizational structures, professional growth, academic systems of reward and incentive, and partnerships. Julie leads the scholarship initiative for Advancing Research Impacts in Society, or the ARIS Center and serves on the graduate faculty in both Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and Environmental Sciences.

As Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Lu-in Wang is responsible for supervising faculty appeal processes; reviewing appointment, promotion, and tenure guidelines for compliance with University policy; and advising deans and campus presidents on policies affecting faculty members. She also works with the Vice Provost for Faculty Diversity and Development to facilitate efforts to recruit and retain a world-class, diverse faculty, help faculty navigate opportunities and challenges as they advance their careers, and raise faculty awareness of ways to build diversity and inclusion into curriculum and classroom environments. In addition, she works with Faculty Records to strengthen and streamline processes related to faculty actions. Relevant Competencies for Engaged Scholarship:

The ability to effectively describe the scholarly components of the work in a portfolio for review, promotion, and/or tenure;
Knowledge of review, promotion, and tenure process and its relationship with community-engaged scholarship; ability to serve on review, promotion, and tenure committee;
The ability to balance tasks in academia (e.g., research, teaching, service) posing special challenges to those engaged in community-engaged scholarship in order to thrive in an academic environment;
The ability to mentor student and junior faculty in establishing and building a community-engaged scholarship-based portfolio.
