Last school year, 20 Black and Latinx educators in the greater Pittsburgh region collaborated with a technical research partner to lead educational research rooted in concepts of equity, justice, and transformative change. These individuals also met monthly to learn about emancipatory research, portraiture, and other research tools. As an initiative, we have learned several key lessons about the process of shifting power. In addition to centering Black and Latinx expertise and culture, the intentional broadening of definitions about what is knowledge, what is research, and who decides was essential to positioning participants to experience power shifts between educator and researcher. Join us as we share lessons learned.

Whether you work in education or another field of study, the lessons are certain to be applicable. Participants will leave having learned several strategies for shifting power in their own spheres.

Presenters

Fatima Brunson

Fatima Brunson, PhD. is post-doctoral researcher in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Brunson earned her doctorate degree in Policy Studies in Urban Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Her research is used to connect literature on teachers’ collaborative practice and culturally sustaining innovations. Currently, she works with schools and districts to better understand how school leaders and teachers work together to enact responsive pedagogies in racially isolated schools and culturally mixed middle schools, high schools, and higher educational institutions.

DaVonna Graham

DaVonna Graham is a doctoral student in the Department of Instruction and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. She serves as a Graduate Research and Teaching Associate in the Center for Urban Education. DaVonna's research interests include learning from Black educators the ways in which they engage in race talk with their students centered on equity, justice and scholar activism. She most recently co-authored an article in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education titled, Storying Youth Lives: Centering in Teaching and Teacher Education (2020).

Anneliese Martinez

Anneliese Martinez is a director, facilitator, and organizer who works across projects and organizations in support of human development in a rapidly changing world. Anneliese serves as the producer for Shifting Power in Educational Research and Development.
